I can't count how many times I saw this on The Midnight Special, especially in the days when Helen Reddy was the "permanent host." I didn't, however, remember those oddly throbbing, phallic buildings at the start. (Nor the Elton John reference.)
It's all so bizarre! I had forgotten all about this. I do recall having the 45 of this song. I was living in a world of make-believe!
The door of Phallus Palace!!!! It's got hair around it.... Help me, Jesus.
Illustrates perfectly how wild and fun, yet totally fucked up, the 1970's were. Thanks for the post!
It was creepy then and it's creepy now.
That's one hell of a freaky cartoon. Almost as bad as the "Jackson 5" animated series from around the same time... Jx
I think it's the same animator (from Mad Magazine, yet) who used to do all the videos for songs on Sonny and Cher's show... and the guy who this ditty wrote Dark Lady for Cher...
I haven't heard this in years. It has to be one of the strangest story-songs ever...how did it become a hit?
I thought dancers acting this out on Carol Burnett was weird...no contest. I wonder what this illustrator would have done with "Delta Dawn"?
